Nikon D800 TV Advert

Did you know, the Nikon D800 promo video was shot in Chicago? The production is now complete, which is another indication for an upcoming release. The usual turnaround for commercial videos is quite quick. This Nikon D800 commercial involved motorcycles (motorcycle mount footage). Ten different D800 cameras were used. There was a lot of high speed action and they had to shut down half the city centre.

Checking A Nikon Camera Sensor For Dust

DSLR cameras are highly susceptible to image sensor dust. Most digital DSLRs sold today including the Nikon D5000 include a built-in sensor-cleaning function. If you see little black dots on your photographs, especially when they are in the same portion of the photo time and again, you’ve got sensor dust. To check your camera sensor for dust, here are a few simple ideas to try. Set the ISO at 100. Set the aperture to F/22 or higher. Turn off the anti-shake VR or any other image stabilizing feature on the lens. Take a picture of a grey card, a light colored even surface, or blue coloured sky. Move the lens around during the exposure. Be careful not to over-expose the shot or you won't be able to see the dust. Take a few different shots just to be sure. View the images on your PC computer or laptop. Increasing the contrast of the image will then show any dust spots.

Changing Shutter Speed

Q. I was wondering how to change the shutter speed to get the photos to not blur

A. Put the mode dial to 'S' for shutter priority mode. Depending on what subject, if you want to "not blur", you should chose no slower than 1/30 sec for hand-held stills, or 1/80 for slowish moving subjects, 1/500 for fast moving subjects. If you are noticing the photos come out dark, then raise the ISO accordingly.

Using A Nikon D5000 In The Snow

Q. I was wondering if its okay to take it outside to take picture of the falling snow. I don't want to ruin my camera because it wasn't cheap but I would love to get pictures of the falling snow.

A. As the battery gets cold, you will need to warm it back up. Most people who shoot in cold weather, carry a spare battery in a pocket nearest our skin so they have a warm one at hand when the other gets cold and stops working.

Battery Grip

Here is a battery grip for the Nikon D5000. It is manufactured by a Chinese company named Travor. It connects to the camera via a tripod mount screw. You take off the battery door on the camera and push the battery connector inside the camera.

Since the Nikon D5000 does not come with an official battery grip there is a workaround. This comes in the form of a cable that connects from the grip to the remote shutter port on the side of the camera.

What do you think?

Older lenses & Nikon D5000

Will older lenses still work on the Nikon D5000?

The answer to that question is YES and NO…lenses without a built-in motor will “work” on the D5000, but you’ll have to adjust focus manually…meaning autofocus will not work on lenses that do not have the AF-S or AF-I designation.

Nikon D5000 Layout of Controls

Here’s a handy guide to the dials, buttons, and other external controls on your Nikon D5000. Camera controls marked with an asterisk have multiple functions.

Quick Guide for the Automatic Exposure Modes on a Nikon D5000

The Nikon D5000 digital camera's fully automatic exposure modes let you choose between automatic or manual focusing, but limit your control over other picture-taking settings. This chart above should give you a brief explanation of the fully automatic exposure modes.

Should consumers buy a Nikon D5000 DSLR or a Compact?

The question ‘to DSLR or not’ is one of the most commonly posed by consumers.

Is the size and weight of a Nikon D5000 a big issue?  Due to their lens mounts and internal mirrors, DSLRs are simply bigger and heavier than most compacts or superzoom cameras. If you want a camera you can slip in a pocket or a small bag, then a compact or a superzoom is the best choice.

Do you want complete control over all the settings? Many compacts and superzooms offer manual modes, but most are restricted in what they’ll let you do or achieve. Some settings may only be available under certain conditions, and the longest exposures may be less than a minute. Aperture priority modes on compacts may let you change their f-numbers, but they have such a large depth-of-field to start with that popular out-of-focus background techniques on portraits are difficult or even impossible to achieve.
If you want the maximum control over your camera’s settings, demand shallow depth-of-field effects, or require long exposures for special effects or astro-photography, a DSLR or Micro Four Thirds camera is the only way to go.
